How to play

Every day there's one target and five numbers. Combine the numbers with + − × ÷ to hit the target exactly.

You may use each number once, in any order. You don't have to use them all. Every puzzle has at least one exact solution.

Classic-Countdown rules: you only ever work with whole numbers, so a ÷ is only allowed when it divides evenly (e.g. 100÷25, not 100÷3).

What is Reach, the daily numbers game?

Reach is a small daily puzzle in the tradition of the Countdown numbers round (and the French Des chiffres et des lettres that inspired it). Each day you get one target between 1 and 999 and a hand of five numbers. Your job is to combine some or all of those numbers, using only + − × ÷, so the running total lands on the target exactly. Everyone in the world gets the same puzzle that day, so a shared score means something. It is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser.

The rules, in one place

Use each of the five numbers at most once. You never have to use all five.
You may combine them in any order and mix the four operations freely.
You work only with whole numbers: a division is legal only when it divides evenly (100÷25 is fine, 100÷3 is not), and you can never drop below a positive whole number.
Every daily puzzle is guaranteed to have at least one exact solution — you are never stuck with an impossible target.
Reaching the target in fewer numbers earns a better score, so there is always a reason to look for a tidier route.

How to actually hit the target — a few tactics

The trick is rarely to build up from your numbers and hope. Strong solvers work backwards from the target:

Anchor with a multiple. Scan for a big number you can multiply close to the target — say the target is 528 and you hold a 75: 75×7 = 525 puts you three away, and a spare 3 finishes it.
Factor the target. If the target is even, or ends in 0 or 5, look for factors among your tiles (a 6 and a 9 make 54; times 10 is 540).
Fine-tune with small numbers. Keep a 1, 2 or 3 in reserve to nudge a near-miss up or down at the end.
Make numbers you don't have. Two small tiles can combine into a useful new one — 4×25 = 100 gives you a clean round number to build on.
Use subtraction to escape overshoots. Multiplying often blows past the target; a subtraction pulls you neatly back into range.

A worked example

Target 274, numbers 4, 6, 10, 25, 50. Working backwards, 274 sits just above 250, and 250 = 25 × 10 — a clean anchor. That leaves 24 to find, and 24 = 4 × 6. Put them together: (25 × 10) + (4 × 6) = 274, solved with four of the five numbers (the 50 goes unused). Notice the pattern: anchor near the target with a multiplication, then fine-tune the small remainder. Other routes exist too — the fun is finding a short one.

Why a new puzzle every day?

A daily puzzle turns a game into a small ritual: one clean challenge, the same for everyone, then you are done until tomorrow. There is no endless feed to fall into and nothing to grind. Solving lengthens your streak, and the spoiler-free result grid lets you compare with friends without giving the answer away. Miss a day?
